School is back in session. It is crazy how this summer went by so fast (at least for me) this year. I have seen pictures of kids going back to school in July. We aren’t too far behind as we start in August. We just got the school supply list and plan to go shopping this week once we check out the sales. While we are shopping for items on the list, there are some things that aren’t on the list. Some of this are tips but they are all essentials for your child. Here are the back to school essentials kids need to help them have an amazing year.

Need for an Amazing Year
Routine
This summer we have not had the best routine. It has not been consistent to say the least. There have been weeks where we were on it and some weeks where I just let it go for my sanity. I can tell a big difference from when my kids are off of their routine. They have less patience. They are a little more cranky. And I am sure you have heard it before kids thrive on routine. So, get on that routine. Create a morning routine, after school routine and bedtime that works for your family. It does not have to elaborate by any means. If fact, keep it simple. The simpler the better in my opinion. For example, our morning routine are the following steps –
- wake up
- breakfast
- brush teeth
- get dressed
- free time if we have any (aka this is the motivator to get through the morning routine quickly for my kids) to play
Sleep
I think I have been a sleep dictator (well, I know I am if I am being honest) when it comes to my kids. Ever since they were babies, I am all about that sleep schedule. Just like kids need routine they need sleep. Since the twins are 10 yrs old, they need 8-10 hours of sleep a day. During the school year, I am make it a point to make sure they are getting at least 9-10 hours. However, if my husband puts them to bed then they may get 8 hours, but the Amazon Echo has been great at reminding him.
I know my daughter needs more sleep than my son. She has always been that way. If you see your child is 8 or 9 and gets sleepy after school, they need an earlier bed time. Studies have soon that good sleep = good grades. I am sure other things also add to that but sleep is the one of the easiest thing to adjust to doing. By the way, my kids bedtime is 8-8:30pm.
Blue light blocking glasses
Now, if you don’t know what blue light blocking glasses, please let me enlighten you. Blue light is everywhere, but we want to limit blue light. Particularly blue light that is emitted through electronic devices. The light these devices emit is about a fraction of that emitted naturally. However, the amount of time we spend using these devices and the proximity of these screens is the concern. As much, as I try to limit my kids electronic use, I am not perfect about it. But knowing it can effect their eyes and their sleep, we got them blue light blocking glasses from Spektrum.
I actually started using this glasses this year with all the computer work I have been doing. I learned about the benefits of having these glasses-
- reduce digital strain
- reduce headaches
- get better sleep
- reduce further eye damage
These are just a few things and some other studies. But they love them and helps keep them on the track of getting the sleep which they need. As difficult as it is to get the kids to stop watching TV or using their electronic devices before bedtime these glasses help.
So there is my list of back to school essentials kids need to help them have an amazing year that aren’t on any school supply list. You can check my #1 back to school clothing shopping tip and great back to school snacks for after school.
