I have to say that I have been slow (I am still dragging my feet) when it comes to Pokémon GO. I texted my neighbor what some things meant and she laughed and asked if she could send her teenage son over. He taught me a few things and I downloaded Pokémon GO on my phone. Oddly, the same day so did my husband and he loved it. I knew I had to do it still dragging my feet. I feel like I am too old (and too busy) to play another game.
That night, I went to bed while my husband and son went to play Pokémon GO and then my son loved it. Joined in the following night, but she was not completely on board. I still at this point haven’t gotten past the app download 2 days. Well today, I went downtown Indianapolis to check out the sailor monument with a friend and her kids. My husband wanted to go since he had the day off and knew he could play Pokémon GO too. Well, the sailor monument doesn’t do tours on Tuesday (bummer because there was a Poké Gym there, so an incentive for next time). We walked around downtown Monument Circle going to Poké Stops.
After walking around for about 30-45min (our meter was running out of time) . My husband and the kids wanted to go somewhere else and ended up at the Downtown Canal. It was hot today so, we hit up the Fresco Italian Café on the Canal for water ( wanted to try the Italian Ice with Tequila since they claimed it was better than a margarita, but water would be more refreshing). After gulping down the waters, we took a break. The servers for Pokemon Go were being slow. During this downtime, we talked to some strangers about the game. In fact, I think a majority of the people on the canal were playing the game. I am talking about businessmen, college kids, families and teenagers. The people who were playing — jogging around the people who were playing the game. I walked around with my family for 1.5 hours because once again our meter was running out. As we left, my daughter was definitely on board with the game.
Place #3 happened after dinner. My kids wanted to go again and apparently, my husband knew a place that we could go. Fort Benjamin Harrison is close to us and also a few other people too. We ventured out again, this time with my camera. The kids and hubby had the phones. We walked around in circles and see other people in our community taking part of the game. Another hour goes by. It was fun to see my family out and about. I still don’t have a complete clue what is going on, but I am glad that my kids have each other to figure it out when my husband is not around. Also, we have something fun to together as a family to add to the list.
Tips:
- If you have a power bank bring it with you or invest in one. They aren’t that expensive and you use in general when you battery is about to die whether you are playing the game or not.
- Watch your data if you are not on unlimited data. This game can use alot of your data if you are playing alot.
- Bring bug spray if you are going to a woody area/park.
- Do not let your child do it alone. Young kids need supervision.
- Be aware of your surroundings. I know that I was actively participating, but watching my kids play. Helping them cross the street. Steering them out of people’s way. Also, being aware there were people driving and playing the game. So they were looking at their phone and not always paying attention.

I haven’t given in to Pokemon Go just yet (dragging my feet here too) but now after reading your post maybe the family will start playing soon. I love how you incorporated the game into a fun family day in your city. I guess it could be fun to play around NYC too. 🙂
I was there with you, dragging my feet too! It is definitely a family thing to do. I have lived in Indianapolis for over 10 years and I visited the Downtown Canal (a very cool and popular spot here in Indianapolis) for the first time last week thanks to Pokemon Go. I was not playing but enjoying the Canal with the hubby while the kids played. My husband took them to the downtown library this past weekend because they were doing some Pokemon GO event and that was the first time my husband checked out the library. It’s beautiful and tons of stuff for kids to do. So, it does get you out and about for sure. I imagine NYC would be a great place to explore.
