The consignment sale season is here and consignment sales are popping up everywhere. If you have never heard of a consignment sale -they are pop shops that last for 2-5 days in a random vacant space or building. Shoppers come to buy second hand gently used items from clothing, toys and accessories that are sold through a third party for the consignor . The consignor receives a percentage of the sale and the third party receives the other percentage.
Why are consignment sales so popular? Well, the commission earned by a consignor maybe better than selling to a consignment shop, which equals more money back into their pocket. Also, you can find great deals on secondhand items that are name brands such as Gap, Nike, Tea Collection or Gymboree that are gently used. Plus, it’s a chance for families to get rid of their kids items they no longer use or out grew to pay for the items they do need.
Before you head out to your next consignment or consignment sales, here are some tips that will help you have a successful shopping trip:
- If your consignor you may get extra perks. You may have to volunteer, but you may shop before the consignment sale is up to the public, which means first dibs on stuff on sale. You may also get a chance to earn a higher percentage on the items you sell at the consignment sale.
- Have a list of what you need. Go through your child’s closet and dresser and look for things they need this season. It’s very disappointing realizing your child needs something and you know you could have gotten that item cheaper at the consignment sale.
- Go early. Whenever the sale starts on the first day is mostly like the best time to go. There will be a line because these people know the best stuff go first. So, if the sale starts at 8am, get there between 7-7:30am.
- Shop with a friend, but not your kids. A friend is very helpful in helping get stuff on your list and vice versa. Kids are great at distracting and making the process of shopping longer.
- Plan to be there for awhile. You are going to be going through lots and lots of clothes. You will be looking for things on your list and finding things not on your list that you may want. You want to take the time to look carefully at the items you plan to purchase. Also, there will be lines.
- Since you are going to be there for a long awhile, wear the right shoes. Did I mention, there will be lines?
- Have a budget. This will help with the decision of need and NEED, like and LOVE. If you are looking to save money than save money rather than buying all the things you came across that was on your list.
- Know the consignment sale. Do they allow strollers? What credit cards do they take? Are they known for their baby items? Is it non-profit consignment (may much lower prices due to a better commission for the consignor)?
- Be patient & bring a snack or take a break.
